Looked like it would have been good, but the installation experience put me off completely. First the encryption, ok, fine. Got past that. Then a weird manual installation that just generated a bunch of gibberish errors supplemented by a README that said they're normal but did an awful job of explaining what to do.

You are probably talking about the ICU64 for VICE, and you have commented under a different post, but never mind. I know that the whole process is a mesh, and I plan to simplify it a lot on the next release, but first i must find some free time (during this year). Alternative, you can try the ICU64 for Frodo which is more featured and easier to install and use.
